The success of Aberdeen’s teamwork approach to bringing conferences and events to the city can clearly be seen through the recent MTS/IEEE OCEANS’17 Aberdeen event which took place at AECC in June.
Brought to the city for the second time by Professor John Watson of the University of Aberdeen’s School of Engineering; who was the local conference
chair at the event in Aberdeen in both 2007 and for the 60th occurrence of the conference this year.
The four day event welcomed 800 delegates from over 25 countries and featured 43 global exhibitors. City partners who played a role in bringing the conference to the city included AECC, Robert Gordon University, the University of Aberdeen, VisitAberdeenshire, VisitScotland, plus a number of companies located in the region.
Prof Watson said: “I am honoured that the MTS and IEEE Societies requested to come back to Aberdeen for the 60th occurrence of their flagship meeting and wish to thank SUBSEA UK for their support of the event and to the Local Organising Committee and the team at AECC who helped to make this event such a success.”
Working in collaboration with local partners is key to attracting events to the city, and Aberdeen have a strong team in place; working closely with both the city’s universities, destination management organisation VisitAberdeenshire and various ambassadors, as part of the Aberdeen Ambassador Network.
Global events brought to the city by Professor Watson include both OCEANS conferences (2007 and 2017), EurOcean 2007, The European Optical Society Annual Meeting in 2012, the 3DTV Conference in 2013 collectively attracting more than 2,200 delegates in total, which in turn has created more than £3 million of economic benefit to the region.
Steven Daun, Associations Sales Manager at AECC commented: “Professor John Watson is a great ambassador for the city, thanks to his passion and enthusiasm in selling Aberdeen as a first class conference destination. This is a great example of the collaborative work we do with key city partners and the Aberdeen Ambassadors Network, and we look forward to working together to continue to attracting international conferences to the new venue.”
