Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) are delighted to announce their latest achievements in their on-going quest to run a sustainable and green Venue.
AECC won the inaugural Green Award at the 2011 Northern Star Business Awards and have since continued to improve sustainability practices at the Venue.
As members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS), AECC were awarded Gold Status following a recent grading visit, making it the only Venue in Aberdeen to have achieved this accolade. Grading is a rigorous process which involves all aspects of the business and what is being done to improve sustainability throughout.
AECC is in the business of people and people generate waste and consume resources like energy. Therefore the AECC is working closely with The Carbon Trust to develop ways to reduce the Venue’s Carbon Footprint, by reducing energy consumption and finding more sustainable methods of improving equipment and procedures in place as well as making cost-savings. Following surveys by The Carbon Trust during 2012, AECC are now planning implementation of new equipment in-line with the findings contained in the resulting report from The Trust.
Within the first quarter of 2013, AECC in partnership with Zero Waste Scotland, are introducing a range of ‘Recycle on the Go’ facilities throughout the Venue. This will improve waste streams and increase the recycling of waste whilst hoping to significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by making the process simple for all visitors, whether first time or regulars. This initiative has been implemented with assistance from the Zero Waste Scotland fund.
The new year also marks the start of AECC working to achieve ISO 2012/1 accreditation, this new standard was introduced in 2012 to improve the sustainability of events by implementation of a sustainability management system. The Venue will be working closely with a consulting company, Sustainable Events, as of January to achieve this accreditation.
Brian Horsburgh, Managing Director of AECC commented: “Sustainability is key for the future of the industry. AECC shows full commitment to the provision of sustainable practice and events for our clients. This, alongside the implementation of the new recycling bins which will be installed throughout the Venue, will allow all visitors; whether they are visiting for a concert, conference or small meeting the opportunity to make a difference simply by placing their rubbish in the correct recycling bin rather than those going straight to landfill!
