Today (Friday 12th August), AECC are joining the global conversation to celebrate International Youth Day. Being an organisation with 65 full time members of staff and over 300 casual catering staff, we have an abundance of talent from the young people who work at the venue and we would like to take the opportunity to shout about their achievements!
Hannah Mitchell (22) and Shona Darling (23 today – happy birthday Shona!), two members of Team AECC have shared their stories below about their journey to reach the point they are currently at in their careers.
“I started my degree in International Tourism Management two years ago at Robert Gordon University (RGU). In the first half of my degree I undertook a variety of different business and tourism related topics. I particularly enjoyed the Branding, Globalisation and Destination Development modules, these focused on how tourism affects a particular industry and how it can be adapted to help benefit not only a specific company but the destination itself which got me interested in the placement role advertised by AECC as Sales Researcher.
After successfully completing an interview at AECC, I began my role in June of this year. The team made me feel very welcome when I started, helping me to settle in quickly. During my placement I have three assessments throughout the year to assess my development within the company. So far in my role it has been a challenge learning about the association market (there is a lot to take in!) but it has been very interesting and it always feels good when we get some success with current research. At the end of the year I have a report to complete which shows how the modules from university assisted in/were developed in my role at AECC.
After my year placement, I have my final year at university which will consist of my final dissertation in which I hope to be able to incorporate some of the industry experience I have gained working here. As a result of this role, I have gained an interest in the association market and hope to build on my knowledge in this area. This has been my first “official” role in an organisation and I definitely feel I have been given opportunities I never would have expected from a student placement such as a trip to Stavanger in Norway to attend The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Annual Conference which really helped with my development.” – Hannah Mitchell
“Before joining AECC, I studied a degree in Festival, Event and Marketing Management at Edinburgh Napier University. During this time, I also did a couple placements, one with an event services supplier and another with an events association. The contacts and experience that I gained within these placements led me to secure my graduate position at VisitScotland in the Events Directorate. During my year there, I worked closely with the Event Industry Development team and the Themed Years Team.
I have recently joined AECC as a Conference Bid Executive. In my graduate programme with VisitScotland, I was lucky enough to be part of the bid team for the Solheim Cup, which Scotland have won to host in 2019 at Gleneagles. The experience on working on bids, in addition to my regular work with industry partners, helped me gain some really valuable experience that was useful for this particular role.
Although I have only been here for a short time, I have loved working at AECC so far. Everyone in the team have been very welcoming and I am exciting for the projects that I will be working on in future.
I am looking forward to gaining more experience in a new field of events, bidding and working within the Associations sector while getting the chance to put my own creative input into bids. Also being originally from Aberdeen, I’m looking forward to seeing first-hand Aberdeen gain some new business for the new venue opening in 2019.” – Shona Darling
