Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre Shows Strong Sustained Growth

Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) is pleased to report significant growth at the end of the Company’s 2012-13 financial year. Total number of events held at the Venue rose by 8% to 611, with event size increasing for many sectors.

In the past 11 years, turnover at the Centre has nearly trebled from £2.5m in 2001-02, to £7.1m in 2012-13 – the best year in the Centre’s 28 year history. It is significant to note that 2012-13 was a non-Offshore Europe* year, and that turnover was slightly ahead of 2011-12 which was an Offshore Europe year. This growth is predicted to continue in 2013-14, also an Offshore Europe year.

The business mix has changed noticeably in the last year, with further growth of the Exhibition sector as well as in Conferences and Small Meetings (under 100 people), and substantial growth in Banqueting.

On top of this, the AECC has increased its economic contribution to Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire from around £12m in 1989, to an estimated £109m last year, and supports over 1, 000 jobs in the Region.

Ed Gillespie, Chairman of AECC’s Board, said: “All of this growth has come firstly through the continued expansion of established events and secondly, the addition of new events, several of which we hope will become regular features.”

He added: “I believe the Centre is in a strong position now, and there are exciting times ahead. The Team at AECC are one of its strongest assets, and they are delivering excellent results.”

Barney Crockett, Leader of Aberdeen City Council, and a member of AECC’s Board, said: “Everybody in Aberdeen and the North-East will be delighted with the progress the AECC has made and the enormous contribution it is making to the local economy, which is reflected in the corporate review. I think they are gratified that Aberdeen City Council  has such a commitment to the facility.

He continued: “The staff have responded wonderfully to the challenges laid down. The prospects for the AECC are extremely bright.”
