The Region
Aberdeen enjoys an impressive mix of beautiful and varied countryside with a busy and interesting city at its heart. The region boasts nearly 300km of coastline, winding rivers, vast forests and open countryside and includes a number of attractive and friendly North East towns.
Many world travellers regard the North East as presenting some of the finest scenery Europe has to offer. Not many destinations can offer countryside that features mountain peaks like Ben Macdhui, the second highest summit in the UK, or rocky cliffs undermined by stunning caves like the “Boilers of Buchan”, which can be up to 100ft deep each.
The region has around 20 small towns and features quiet coastal retreats such as Pennan and popular highland tourist destinations like Braemar. The region also features two of Scotland’s five skiing destinations, the Lect and Glenshee.
Traditional industries such as fishing and farming still flourish in and around Aberdeenshire with the city itself know for the oil industry and more recently the energy industry.
Aberdeenshire is known for its selection of renowned local specialties such as sticky toffee pudding, which was invented at the North East establishment the Udny Arms Hotel, shortbread, Cullen skink, Mackies and Rizza’s ice cream, Aberdeen Angus and of course, Malt Whisky.
The area is also home to many famous people including footballer Denis Law, Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics and comedian Billy Connolly. Famous historical figure Thomas Blake Glover also lived in the North East, leaving the region in the 1800’s and moving to Japan where he became a national hero, becoming the first non-Japanese person to receive the highest honour of “Order of the Rising Sun”.
